San Luis Valley Post-Fire Outreach Meeting
Thursday, May 23, 2019
Location: 5858 Budweiser Way
Did you know flooding is the #1 natural disaster in the United States, even above fire? Six inches of water can sweep a person off their feet and one foot of water can wash away a car.
From 2005 to 2014, the average flood claim was $42,000/year. Total national claims topped $3.5 billion (yes billion!) during the same period. Homeowner’s policies typically don’t cover flood and with the recent fires in the area, the chance of flooding is even higher for approximately the next 10 years. Think you’ll just wait to receive FEMA disaster assistance when the time comes? Think again! Most assistance comes in the form of SBA loans because FEMA individual assistance grants for homeowners are only available in VERY large presidentially-declared disaster events. The time to buy flood insurance is NOW since there is a 30 day waiting period on the NFIP policy and most private flood insurance policies.
Come to the meeting to learn about recovery efforts underway in your area, to learn more about flood risk, and to learn more about flood insurance. A brief presentation from officials will begin at 6 pm with Q & A period and then time to meet one on one with your officials at the end of the evening. Can’t make the meeting?
